LA PRISIÓN PROVINCIAL DE MURCIA: UNA APROXIMACIÓN ARQUITECTÓNICA, HISTÓRICA Y CULTURAL

The Provincial Prison of Murcia (Spain) is an important element of cultural heritage from this city, mainly due to its architectural characteristics and its intense historical content. In spite of everything, this building has suffered a long time of institutional neglect and several proposals for its complete or partial demolition and destruction, but it has survived and today is a basic inheritance in the urban configuration of Murcia City. Therefore, in this article we describe architectural, historical and cultural characteristics of this outstanding inheritance, with the goal of make aware to the society from Murcia that is necessary its maintenance, making a good use of its potential like didactic resource for the education of the local and regional history.La Prisión Provincial de Murcia es un importante elemento del patrimonio cultural murciano, debido principalmente a sus características arquitectónicas y a su sólido significado histórico. A pesar de todo, el inmueble ha sufrido un largo periodo de abandono institucional y diversos intentos de demolición y destrucción total o parcial, logrando sobrevivir y constituyendo actualmente un elemento patrimonial básico en la configuración de la fisonomía urbana de la zona norte de la ciudad de Murcia. Es por ello, que en el presente trabajo se describen las características arquitectónicas, históricas y culturales de este destacado bien patrimonial, con el fin de concienciar a la sociedad murciana de la necesidad de conservarlo, ponerlo en valor y reutilizarlo, aprovechando al máximo todo su potencial como recurso didáctico para la enseñanza de la historia del municipio y la Región de Murcia
