I argue that Montaigne is a useful antecedent in the matter of personal identity. Between an introduction and a conclusion, this paper is divided into five parts. Firstly, I explain the montaignean scepticism and its relationship with the evolution of modern science and philosophy. Secondly, I argue the peculiarity of the question about the self. Thirdly, I comment on how the question of personal identity is tackled in the Essais. Fourthly, I show that, in the case of Montaigne, that implies the production of a new philosophical writing, the essay.
