El paisaje cultural y los mayas yucatecos

The Maya zone is magic for many people, both academics and tourists. In part, this "magic" is produced through an external vision of a landscape which has witnessed the origin, growth and flourishing of the Mayan civilization. This landscape is not an object, but the result of the daily activity of the inhabitants of the zone. The landscape is both a process and a text. A first approximation to the landscape of the Yucatecan Mayas exemplifies the place of the landscape in cultural construction and reproduction. Beginning with a definition of the concept cultural landscape, it is argued that the landscape is central to the definition of a group in time and space. Threats to this landscape may represent grave threats to the cultural integrity of the group. The processes of colonization and more recently of tourist development are identified as pro- jects of spatial hegemony which have as their result (if not their object) the transformation of the cultural landscape of the Mayan group, with its consequent cultural disintegration.La zona maya es mágica para muchas personas: tanto para académicos como para turistas. En parte, esta 'magia' se produce mediante una visión externa de un paisaje que ha atestiguado el origen, crecimiento y florescencia de la civilización maya. Pero este paisaje no es un objeto, sino el resultado de las actividades cotidianas de los habitantes de la zona. El paisaje es un proceso y un texto. En este ensayo se presenta un primer acercamiento al paisaje de los mayas yucatecos, para ejemplificar el lugar del paisaje en la construcción y reproducción culturales. Empezando con una definición del concepto de paisaje cultural, se arguye que el paisaje es punto clave para la definición del grupo en el espacio y en el tiempo. Se plantea que las amenazas a este espacio pueden ser graves amenazas a la integridad cultural de grupo. El proceso de colonización, y más recientemente el desarrollo turístico, son identificados como proyectos de hegemonía espacial que tienen como resultado, si no es que como meta, la transformación del paisaje cultural del grupo maya, con la consecuente desintegración cultural
