Le perçage de l’os est couramment pratiqué dans de nombreux types de chirurgie comme lors de la pose de vis d’ostéosynthèse et d’implants dentaires et cochléaires. Lors de l'opération de perçage, le chargement thermomécanique dû à l'interaction outil-os peut endommager les tissus osseux au voisinage de la zone de perçage. Ainsi, une augmentation significative de la température peut provoquer une ostéonécrose thermique. Il est donc important d'optimiser les conditions opératoires (vitesses de rotation et d'avance, géométrie du foret, stratégie de perçage...) afin de réduire les risques d'endommagement de l'os.
