Veterinari često preporučuju kiruršku kastraciju za kontrolu populacije kod pasa i mačaka. Međutim, postoje nekirurške metode za kontrolu reprodukcije. Farmakološke metode kontracepcije i kastracije su sigurne, pouzdane i reverzibilne. U tu svrhu primjenjuju se progestini i androgeni, koji djeluju da negativnom povratnom spregom sprječavaju izlučivanje GnRH , odnosno FSH i LH. Isto tako primjenjuju se GnRH agonisti i antagonisti koji se vežu na receptore hipofize i na taj način uzrokuju supresiju gonadotropina, odnosno kompetitivno blokiraju GnRH receptore čime inhibiraju sekreciju LH i FSH na nivou hipofize i njihovo inhibitorno djelovanje nastupa odmah. U primjeni je još i imunokontracepcija dok se značajna istraživanja provode na razvoju kontracepcije i kastracje primjenom reproduktivnih toksina te genske terapije.Veterinarians often recommend surgical castration for population control in dogs and cats. However, there are non-surgical methods to control reproduction. Pharmacological methods for contraception and castration are safe, reliable and reversible. For this purpose, are used progestins and androgens, which inhibit the secretion of GnRH, that is, FSH and LH, by negative feedback. GnRH agonists and antagonists that bind to the pituitary receptors are also used, and that way causing suppression of gonadotropins, competitively blocking GnRH receptors, whereby inhibiting the secretion of LH and FSH at the pituitary level and their inhibitory action occurs immediately. Immunocontraception is also in use, while significant research is being conducted on the development of contraception and castration using reproductive toxins and gene therapy
