Foraging ecology of adult and juvenile grey herons Ardea cinerea L. on submontane dam reservoir.

Badania dotyczące behawioru ptaków podczas żerowania dostarczają informacji niezbędnych do zrozumienia ich strategii życiowych. Szczególnie inetersujący jest wpływ wieku na efektywność pobierania pokarmu.Celem pracy było zbadanie aktywności czapli siwej Ardea cinerea na podgórskim zbiorniku zaporowym, porównanie ekologii żerowania osobników dorosłych i młodych tego gatunku oraz wpływu wieku ptaków i wielkości ryb na czas manipulacji (s) i opłacalność (g s-1) ich schwytania.Liczenia czapli siwych prowadzono od marca do sierpnia, raz w miesiącu, natomiast obserwacje żerujących ptaków kilka razy w sierpniu. Określano wówczas (1) wiek osobnika, (2) liczbę kroków wykonanych w czasie żerowania, (3) liczbę ataków, (4) liczbę udanych ataków, (5) szacunkową długość ryby oraz (6) czas manipulacji. Uzyskane wyniki porównano miedzy dorosłymi i młodymi ptakami.Wiek ptaków nie miał wpływu na wskaźnik przemieszczania, liczbę schwytanych ryb oraz pozyskaną biomasę. Młode atakowały znacznie częściej niż dorosłe, miały jednak niższy sukces polowania. Wyniki sugerują, że aby uzsykać podobną biomasę ryb co dorosłe ptaki, młode kompensują brak umiejętności częstszymi atakami. Nie wykazano różnic w wielkości łapanych ryb. Zarówno czas manipulacji, jak i opłacalność były różne w zależnosci od wielkości ryby. Najbardziej opłacalne okazały się duże ryby zarówno dla osobników dorosłych jak i młodych oraz średnie dla ptaków dorosłych. Wiek czapli nie miał wpływu na czas manipulacji jedynie małymi rybami. Mlode ptaki były mniej skuteczne w polowaniu prawdopodobnie z powodu mniejszych umiejętności w łapaniu i manipulacji ofiarami.Studies of birds’ foraging behavior provide important information necessary for understanding of their life strategies. The effect of birds’ age on efficiency of food intake is highly interesting. The objectives of this study were: 1) to investigate numbers of grey heron Ardea cinerea on submontane dam reservoir, 2) to compare the foraging ecology of adult and juvenile and 3) to examine the influence of bird’s age and size of fish on handling time (s) and profitability (g s-1) of capture.Counting of grey herons was carried out once a month from March to August 2013. Observations of foraging herons were studied several times in August. (1) Age of birds, (2) number of steps performed during foraging, (3) number of attacks, (4) number of captures, (5) an estimate of the length of the fish and (6) handling time (s) were determined during individual sessions. The results compared between adult and juvenile birds.Birds’ age had no impact on the rate of movement, number of captures and biomass. Juveniles attacked prey much more frequently than adults, however with lower hunting success. The results suggest that juveniles of grey heron compensate the lack of experience by more frequent attacks to obtain similar biomass as adults. There were no differences in the size of captured fish between adults and juvenile birds. Both handling time and profitability were different and depending on the prey size. Large prey were the most profitable for adults and juveniles and medium prey for adults also. Age of birds had impact on handling time except when birds manipulated small fish. Juvenile birds were less efficient in hunting probably because of less experience in catching and manipulating the prey
