The Great Avant-Garde as a revolt against mass culture. José Ortega y Gasset - high culture in the times of general mass culture

Praca ma zaprezentować zarówno artystyczne, jak i społeczne, źródła narodzin Wielkiej Awangardy. Analiza źródłowa tego zjawiska artystycznego u progu XX wieku jest niezbędna w kontekście dalszych rozważań dotyczących buntowniczej twórczości artystów awangardowych. Wielka Awangarda była bowiem formacją, która w sposób świadomy i celowy przeciwstawiała się kulturze masowej oraz dominacji mas ludzkich, przede wszystkim w obszarze sztuki, ale również w wymiarze społecznym i politycznym. W Rozdziale I obok zarysu głównych postulatów impresjonizmu, jako historycznego fundamentu otwierającego drogę artystom awangardowym, został podkreślony niebagatelny wkład Paula Cézanne’a, którego twórczość była przede wszystkim bezpośrednią zapowiedzią malarstwa kubistycznego, ale miała także duży wpływ na formowanie podstawowych postulatów całej Wielkiej Awangardy. Formalne osiągnięcia impresjonizmu oraz twórczość Cézanne’a zapowiadały pojawienie się na arenie sztuki nurtów awangardowych, spośród których, wybrałam trzy, najbardziej według mnie reprezentatywne dla przedstawienia artystycznej rebelii przeciwko zjawisku masowości: fowizm, ekspresjonizm oraz kubizm. Bunt artystów awangardowych przebiegał dwutorowo: ideowy bunt znalazł swoje odbicie na płaszczyźnie formalnych środków wyrazu takich, jak: odejście od tradycyjnego kanonu, porzucenie realizmu i naturalizmu przedstawień związane z silną tendencją do puryfikacji sztuki z wszelkich pierwiastków humanizujących oraz podążanie w kierunku intelektualnego, wymagającego ideału „sztuki dla sztuki”. Rozdział II dotyczy społecznych warunków narodzin Wielkiej Awangardy, rozumianej jako artystyczny bunt przeciwko zjawisku masowości. W tym celu, podejmę próbę zdefiniowania takich pojęć, jak: masa, elita, społeczeństwo masowe oraz kultura popularna. Pojęcia te tworzą bowiem trzon społecznych oraz estetycznych rozważań hiszpańskiego filozofa José Ortegi y Gasseta, którego filozofia stanowiła będzie punkt centralny mojej pracy. Najważniejszym dziełem z zakresu badań społecznych i politycznych Ortegi był „Bunt mas”, w którym filozof zawarł fundamentalne rozróżnienie na masę oraz elitę społeczną. Dziełem tym, hiszpański filozof wpisuje się także w historyczną tradycję krytyki kultury popularnej i wszelkich zjawisk społecznych oraz politycznych z nią związanych. Krytyka Ortegi y Gasseta jest o tyle ciekawa, że odchodząc od historycznych tradycji krytyki kultury masowej, starał się on stworzyć panoramiczny i wielowątkowy obraz świata zdominowanego przez zbuntowane masy, podkreślając zagrożenia płynące z zupełnie nowej sytuacji dziejowej. Wizja Ortegi w tym sensie była jednak dwuznaczna, że z jednej strony, w powszechnej dominacji mas i kultury popularnej widział on realne zagrożenie dla kultury i sztuki, lecz z drugiej strony sytuacja, w której sztuka wysoka pozostaje na marginesie, jedynie w rękach wybranej elity społecznej, była dla niego naturalnym wyrazem pożądanego i zdrowego porządku świata. Próba przedstawienia Wielkiej Awangardy jako artystycznej rebelii przeciwko powszechnej masowości nie jest zadaniem łatwym, ze względu na złożoność znaczeniową pojęć niezbędnych do jej analizy. Istnieje wiele różnych teorii kultury masowej, podobnie jak spotkać się możemy z wielością definicji takich pojęć, jak: masa, elita czy społeczeństwo masowe. Również formacja Wielkiej Awangardy pozostaje zjawiskiem, które wymyka się sztywnym definicyjnym ramom i podejmując próbę jej określenia, polegać można jedynie na ogólnych wyznacznikach i cechach awangardyzmu pierwszej połowy XX wieku, na które wskazują jego badacze. Na potrzeby mojej pracy, ograniczę się do wybranych koncepcji powyższych zagadnień, skupiając się na społecznej i estetycznej myśli Ortegi y Gasseta, w kontekście której postaram się przedstawić wybrane nurty formacji Wielkiej Awangardy, jako artystycznej rebelii przeciwko dominującej w XX wieku powszechnej masowości.The work shows both artistic and social roots of Avant-Garde, which are vital in the context of the further consideration of the work of rebellious avant-garde artists. Avant-Garde was in fact formation that consciously and deliberately opposed to mass culture and the domination of the masses, especially in the field of art, but also in social and political life. Arts foundation paving the way of avant-garde artists was impressionistic painting, which was the first in history, rejecting the classical canons and academic requirements of creation, for the creativity of individual artist.Chapter I is to outline the main demands (principles) of Impressionism and the art of Paul Cézanne, whose work was a direct announcement of Cubist painting, but also had a great influence on the formation of the basic postulates of the entire Avant-Garde. Then I chose fauvism, expressionism and cubism as the most representative art movements of the artistic rebellion against the mass culture. Rise of the avant-garde artists proceeded in two ways: ideological rebellion was reflected at the level of formal means of expression, such as moving away from the traditional canon, the abandonment of realism and naturalism associated with a strong tendency to purify the art of all humanizing elements and moving towards intellectual, demanding idea of “art for art's sake”.Chapter II deals with the social conditions of the birth of the Avant-Garde. In order to present these conditions it is crucial to undertake an attempt to define such concepts as mass, elite, mass society and popular culture. These concepts are fundamental for presenting the philosophy of José Ortega y Gasset and his concept of art and society in the twentieth century. The most important work in the field of social and political studies of Ortega was a “The Revolt of the Masses”, in which the philosopher concluded a fundamental distinction between mass and elite of society. The work of the Spanish philosopher also fits into the historical tradition of the critique of popular culture. Therefore, it seems necessary to give short presentation of selected historical critique of mass culture, which will be represented by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Alexis de Tocqueville, Thomas Carlyle, Matthew Arnold, Ernest Renan and catastrophic visions of Friedrich Nietzsche and Oswald Spengler. Criticism of Ortega y Gasset is so interesting that moving away from all utopian images plotted by de Tocqueville, Carlyle, Arnold and Nietzsche's catastrophism. Ortega created a wide and varied view of the world dominated by the rebellious masses, emphasizing the risks associated with a completely new historical situation. Ortega's vision in this sense, however, was ambiguous, because on the one hand, the universal domination of the masses and popular culture has been a real threat to culture and art, but on the other hand, it is natural the situation in which high culture is only in the hands of a selected elite, being a part of the desired world order.The attempt to represent Avant-Garde as an artistic rebellion against the mass culture in the modern world is not an easy task due to the complexity of semantic concepts which are essential for the analysis. There are many different theories of mass culture, as we meet with the multiplicity of definitions of concepts such as mass, elite and mass society. Also, the formation of Avant-Garde is a phenomenon that transcends rigid definitional framework and its attempt to define can only rely on the general determinants and characteristics of avant-gardism of the first half of the twentieth century. For the purposes of my work, I will confine myself to the selected concepts, focusing on the social and aesthetic ideas of Ortega y Gasset, in the context of which I will try to present Avant-Garde formation as artistic rebellion against the universal and dominant mass culture in twentieth century
