Strach to silna, negatywna emocja, którą ludzie odczuwają w sytuacjach rzeczywistego zagrożenia, natomiast lęk jest stanem emocjonalnym wywoływanym przez oczekiwanie na nadchodzące niebezpieczeństwo. Ponieważ zarówno strach jak i lęk mogą prowadzić do patologii, przejawiających się w postaci chorób afektywnych, istnieje potrzeba poznania mechanizmów tych zjawisk. Za dobrą metodę badania mechanizmów lęku uznane zostało warunkowanie strachu (ang. fear conditioning) w modelu zwierzęcym, będące odmianą mechanizmu warunkowania klasycznego opisanego na przełomie XIX i XX wieku przez Iwana Pawłowa.
