Iconographic program of the Arc of Constantine

Roman emperors were raising columns, monuments and triumphal arches to preserve their reign and power. These are the icons of their rules and most of all a social prestige. The arches were the monuments of victory, and ornaments of the city. The arch of Constantine the Great was built in Rome, in 315. It was to commemorate his victory over Maxentius after winning a battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312, and to celebrate a tenth anniversary of his reign. The objective was to introduce the sculptures located on the arch of Constantine the Great. I presented a short description of the individual reliefs. I described the figure of Constantine the Great, his politics and reforms. He was the first emperor who accepted baptism and became a Christian. He introduced many reforms that changed social, economical and political systems. He did not harass the Christians, more so, he realized how Christian religion could help him in strengthening his reign. He was accepted and respected by the priests and clerics. All that led to have him announced the Great. This fact along with his triumph over Maxentius played a major role in a decision to raise the triumphal arch in his honor. It is not clear why this arch includes reliefs about other emperors. The most often used argument is that by adding the elements related to other emperors, he wanted his arch to be that much more valuable. This resulted in having Constantine included in the group of the great emperors of the Roman Empire. His arch became an innovative construction through a use of the reliefs related to other emperors such as Trajan, Hadrian, and Marcus Aurelius. The elements of Hadrian located on the arch represent essential virtues such as courage, bravery and piety. Constantine the Great also possessed these virtues. He was the man of doing, righteous, protective and god-fearing. Some of the reliefs found on the arch really come from the arches of other emperors – Marcus Aurelius and Hadrian. They were detached from their home structure and then mounted on the arch of Constantine. All the head pieces found on them were rebuilt to present that of Constantine.The arch distinguishes itself by the diversity of colors and materials.The arch of Constantine the Great is one the few that survived to our modern times. The diversity of its elements makes it a very interesting architecture. This combination of elements from different times, gives us an opportunity to study the evolution of reliefs in each of these time periods of the empire. All that made this arch an innovative and interesting piece of architecture.Cesarze rzymscy utrwali swoją władzę i potęgę poprzez wystawianie kolumn, pomników, oraz łuków triumfalnych. To symbole ich rządów a przede wszystkim prestiżu społecznego. Łuki stawały się zarówno pomnikami zwycięstw, jak również ozdabiały miasto. Łuk triumfalny cesarza Konstantyna Wielkiego wystawiono w Rzymie 315 roku dla uczczenia jego zwycięstwa nad Maksencjuszem w bitwie w 312 roku o most Mulwijski, oraz dla uczczenia dziesięciolecia rządów cesarza (decenalia).Celem pracy była prezentacja obrazów umieszczonych na Łuku Konstantyna Wielkiego. Przedstawiłam poszczególne płaskorzeźby, dokonując ich krótkiego opisu. Ukazałam postać cesarza Konstantyna jego politykę oraz reformy. Konstantyn był cesarzem, który jako pierwszy przyjął chrzest. Przeprowadził liczne reformy, które zmieniły ustrój społeczny, ekonomiczny i polityczny. Nie prześladował chrześcijan, wręcz przeciwnie zauważył, że religia chrześcijańska może pomóc mu w umocnieniu władzy. Przez co uzyskał aprobatę duchownych i kapłanów. To wszystko sprawiło, że został okrzyknięty Wielkim. Zarówno ten fakt, jak również zwycięstwo nad Maksencjuszem sprawiły, że wzniesiono łuk triumfalny na jego cześć. Tak do końca to nie wiadomo, co było przyczyną umieszczenia na łuku różnych reliefów zaczerpniętych od innych cesarzy. Najczęściej powtarzany jest fakt, że poprzez umieszczenie elementów od innych cesarzy chciał, aby jego łuk posiadał wyższą wartość. Sprawiło to, że zaliczono go do grona wielkich imperatorów cesarstwa rzymskiego. Poprzez wykorzystanie płaskorzeźb od takich cesarzy jak Trajan, Hadrian, czy Marek Aureliusz, jego łuk stał się nowatorską budowlą. Elementy Hadriana umieszczone na łuku przedstawiają bardzo istotne cnoty jaką jest męstwo, dzielność oraz pobożność. Takimi cnotami obdarzony był również Konstantyn Wielki. Był człowiekiem czynu, sprawiedliwym, opiekuńczym, bogobojnym. Płaskorzeźby pochodzące z łuku Marka Aureliusza podobnie jak Hadriana umieszczone na łuku przedstawiające głowy cesarzy zostały przekłute na głowę Konstantyna. Łuk wyróżnia się różnorodnością kolorów i materiałów. Łuk Konstantyna Wielkiego jest jednym z nielicznych, które zachowały się do czasów współczesnych. Różnorodność jego elementów sprawia, że jest bardzo interesującą budowlą. Poprzez połączenie w niej tylu elementów zaczerpniętych z innych okresów, można prześledzić rozwój rzeźby w poszczególnych okresach cesarstwa.
