Ph.D.This study combined the L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS) (Dörnyei, 2009) with complexity theories (Larsen-Freeman & Cameron, 2008) to investigate the English learning motivation of three Chinese students as they moved between multiple learning contexts: secondary school in Mainland China (an EFL context), a Hong Kong university (EMI courses), and a semester-long exchange program in an English-speaking country (a study-abroad context). Adopting a longitudinal, mixed methods multiple-case study design, this study collected and triangulated data from questionnaires, interviews, and guided emails in five time phases over 20 months.
