Steep terrain, fragile geology and abundant rainfall result in a high sediment concentration and high discharge variation in rivers in Taiwan. The distribution of riparian vegetation gradually increases in downstream area due to the declining environmental stresses. Riparian vegetation has the ability to protect the bank from erosion thus plays an important role in geomorphological evolution of downstream rivers. Methods for estimating flow intensity include velocity, river bed shear stress, and stream power. Among them, stream power is the most suitable for estimating the change in river morphology at basin scales.
