The relative characteristics between stream power movement and vegetated reach progression along the rivers

Steep terrain, fragile geology and abundant rainfall result in a high sediment concentration and high discharge variation in rivers in Taiwan. The distribution of riparian vegetation gradually increases in downstream area due to the declining environmental stresses. Riparian vegetation has the ability to protect the bank from erosion thus plays an important role in geomorphological evolution of downstream rivers. Methods for estimating flow intensity include velocity, river bed shear stress, and stream power. Among them, stream power is the most suitable for estimating the change in river morphology at basin scales. Therefore, stream power is used in this study to investigate the distribution of riparian vegetation. The Google Street View and Google Earth are used in this study to find out the place where riparian vegetation is slightly affected by floods. Through the analysis of these reaches, the specific stream power of which is about 20~30 W/m^2. These low values reflect that riparian vegetation is resistant to large floods and protects river banks. The value of specific stream power can be used to discriminate the river morphology. The specific stream power is typically > 600 W/m^2 for mountain rivers, 100~600 W/m^2, for braided rivers ,and < 100 W/m^2 for rivers in lowland plains. Total stream power considers the scouring power of the cross sections, while specific stream power considers the scouring power of unit area in channel beds. The combination of total stream power and specific stream power serves as a method to discriminate the difference of river morphology from upstream to downstream reaches. The result of the distribution of riparian vegetation can be used as a reference in river rehabilitation and vegetation engineering. Furthermore, the value and variation of total stream power and specific stream can be used to describe the developing tendency of river morphology.
