The objective of this study is to describe the interpersonal metafunction characteristics of speeches produced by Speaking 4 class students of English Education Department of Yogyakarta State University in the academic year of 2012/2013 in a topic of electoral campaign. The concerns of this study are related to the students’ ability in positioning themselves and in emphasizing their propositions and proposals. In relation to those issues, this study investigates the mood types, the person systems, and the modal commitments realized in their speeches. This study employs a qualitative technique.
