Scepticism and Truth in Hegel’s Philosophy

L’hypothèse de départ de ce travail consiste à tenir que les notions de scepticisme et de vérité, bien qu’opposées, se retrouvent au coeur de la philosophie de Hegel. Alors que, depuis quelques décennies, son rapport au scepticisme a suscité l’intérêt de la recherche, la question est loin d’être épuisée. Car ce rapport de Hegel au scepticisme admet deux côtés : d’une part l’interprétation qu’il en fournit – notamment celle du scepticisme antique –, d’autre part la réponse qu’il apporte au défi sceptique. La spécificité du rapport de Hegel au scepticisme antique apparaît dans les deux dimensions de ce rapport : (1) à travers une attention considérable portée aux textes pyrrhoniens et une interprétation novatrice de ce scepticisme ; (2) par une réponse, à même la construction du système, au défi sceptique tel qu’il est conçu. En quoi consiste cette double originalité ? À quel scepticisme Hegel veut-il faire face et en quoi sa défense consiste-t-elle ? Tel est, exprimé très généralement, le problème que nous posons. La thèse que nous soutenons s’articule en trois points. (1) Hegel interprète le scepticisme antique comme entièrement négatif, comme l’intellection et l’utilisation strictement négatives du dialectique : cette lecture est très originale comparée à celle de ses contemporains. (2) La négativité sceptique est surmontée à même le système (2a) par intégration à lui et (2b) par la construction d’un concept de vérité immunisé aux modes sceptiques. (3) La connaissance rationnelle de la vérité doit faire face à son historicité, c’est-à-dire, d’abord, faire face à un scepticisme contemporain de Hegel par une éthique de la vérité, et ensuite à une réutilisation historiste des modes sceptiques par leur réfutation. En somme, nous voudrions montrer que sa lecture radicale des sceptiques antiques a conduit Hegel à élaborer une défense du système, la plupart du temps implicite, qui soit capable de résister aux assauts sceptiques ; que cette lecture a donc joué pour lui un rôle crucial dans la détermination des concepts de dialectique et de vérité ainsi que dans la compréhension de sa propre philosophie dans l’histoire de la philosophie.The starting point of this work is the idea that scepticism and truth are central notions in Hegel’s philosophy. Although his relationship to scepticism has been arousing a growing interest for about thirty years, this topic is far from being exhausted. For Hegel’s approach to scepticism has two sides: on the one hand, his interpretation of it – especially of ancient scepticism –, on the other hand, his answer to the sceptical challenge. The specificity of Hegel’s relationship to ancient scepticism shows in both of these aspects: first, through considerable attention dedicated to Pyrrhonian texts and through a pioneering interpretation of such scepticism; second, in an answer to the sceptical challenge, as Hegel conceives of it, that is built in the very construction of the system. What does this twofold approach consist in? What kind of scepticism does Hegel cope with and how is the system defended? Such is, in very general terms, the problem we would like to address. Our thesis hinges on three points. (1) Hegel reads ancient scepticism as thoroughly negative, as the strictly negative comprehension and use of the dialectical, which proves to be a very original reading when compared with contemporary ones. (2) Sceptical negativity is sublated in the system (2a) by integration and (2b) through the elaboration of a concept of truth that is immune to sceptical modes. (3) The rational knowledge of truth has to deal with its historicity; that is, it has to confront, first, a contemporary scepticism with an ethic of truth, and second a historicist use of the sceptical modes via their refutation. In other words, we would like to show that Hegel’s radical interpretation of ancient scepticism led him to develop a mostly implicit defence of the system against sceptical attacks; that this interpretation consequently has a key role to play in determining the concepts of dialectics and of truth as well as in the self-comprehension of his philosophy in the history of philosophy
