Bei der Behandlung saurer Grubenwässer fallen in den Grubenwasserreinigungsanlagen des Lausitzer Braunkohlereviers jährlich rund 13 Mio. m³ Schlamm an. Dabei handelt es sich überwiegend um carbonathaltige Eisenhydroxidschlämme. Die Schlämme werden in Tagebauseen, spezielle Absetzbecken oder in ausgekohlte Tagebaubereiche eingeleitet. Der Umgang mit diesen Dünnschlämmen setzt Kenntnisse ihres Umweltverhaltens voraus. Zur Charakterisierung ihrer Eigenschaften wurde mit dem Schlamm-Modell ein komplexes Instrumentarium entwickelt.
