Acid mine drainage is one of the most serious environmental problems in the international mining industry. During and after mining of mineral deposits (mainly metal ore deposits and coal deposits) which contain sulfide minerals (especially pyrite and other iron sulfides), these minerals can be oxidized, provided water and oxygen have access. As a result, acid waters with low pH values and often high metal and sulfate contents are generated. These contaminated waters have negative impacts on the natural environment, in particular on aquatic ecosystems. Acid mine drainage can occur for long periods after mining has ceased. To avoid irreversible damage to the environment, acid mine water has to be treated before discharged to the environment. This is usually done by neutralization, mainly with hydrated lime or crushed limestone. Sludges generated in this process can contain high metal contents and have to be deposited in a safe manner. Treatment of acid mine water can be necessary for long periods and is associated with high investment and operating costs. Therefore the objective should be to prevent or at least to minimize acid mine water generation in situ. In the course of this research project it has been investigated, if backfilling is an effective method for prevention of acid mine drainage in underground metal ore mines with regard to technical, economical and environmental aspects. The research work was done in cooperation by the Institute for Mining and the Institute for Economics of the Technical University Clausthal. The project was funded by a grant from the research foundation Volkswagen-Stiftung. In this report the results from the investigations on the technical and hydrological part are presented, which were carried out by the Institute for Mining.
