application/pdfThis paper is a translation from the preface of the following book: Geschichte der deutschen Volksdichtung (ed.: Hermann Strobach, Akademie Verlag 1981, Berlin). My main reason for translating it is to introduce the author's way of thinking to Japan. The author, Hermann Strobach, has outdated the standpoint of the idea of the "Grundschicht"; he proposes a new thought: the creative of the people in the "Grundschicht" is also the most important moment for the development of the formation of the variations in the field of "oral tradition". Predominately there has been a fixed idea of jōmin (people in the "Grundschicht") in Japanese folklore. And there is no clash with the classic image of jōmin. I hope that this translation will raise earnest discussion about it
