Juliet Shields

Juliet moved to Darwin with her husband John William in 1961. They married in Canberra on 12 December 1959 and had one son Alastair John. Juliet worked for Ron Withnall, then Crown Law Officer. She was a keen actress and was active in a number of productions of the Darwin Theatre Group in the 1960s and early 1970s. In 1974, Juliet joined the Northern Territory Administration of the Commonwealth Public service as a clerk then transferred to the conveyance section of Crown Law. She became one of the first female section heads in that Department. In 1978, following self government, Juliet transferred to the newly established Northern Territory Department of Law where she was responsible for the Commercial Division. She spent over 19 years with the Territory Law Department handling many of the Northern Territory Government's high profile transactions. These included the purchase of the Strehlow Collection, building of the Beaufort and Darwin Performing Arts Centre and handling of the Cullen Bay Marina. She was a former chairperson of the Agents Licensing Board and was involved with the National Trust. She was a keen dressmaker and sewed her own clothes and had an extensive collection of antique Victorian coloured glass.
