Alan Hutchison

27Hutchison was born in Adelaide on 13 September 1888 to George Thomas Hutchison and his wife Emily Edith nee Dawe, who were married in Adelaide in 1886. His brother William Arthur was born on 18 March 1892 and his sister Bessie Melbourne was born on 1 January 1893. The two brothers may have been in Darwin on opposing cricket teams in 1914, because a W. Hutchison and an A. Hutchison appear in results from the period. There is an article discussing Alan Hutchison who had left Darwin for the Front travelling from Adelaide to Perth for his marriage. Notification of his marriage appeared in the Advertiser of the 8 November 1919. He applied for a licence as a business salesman in Adelaide on 13 March 1950. Hutchison was an active member of the RSL in Adelaide, organising activities for the 50th Battalion AIF Club in 1950 and was a member of the Burnside RSL in 1954.Hutchison left with Captain Lewis?s first Contingent April 1915 from Darwin, although he enlisted in Adelaide. The Unit embarked from Adelaide, on board HMAT A60 'Aeneas' on 11 April 1916. Hutchison was promoted to Sergeant on 28 May 1916. He was in France November 1916 when he was mentioned in a letter from the front and on the Somme in 1917 when mentioned in a published letter as having worked for the survey department in Darwin. He was mentioned in Despatches Awarded, and Promulgated in the 'London Gazette' No. 31448 (11 July 1919); the 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 124 (30 October 1919). Recommendation date: 20 January 1919. He returned to Australia 12 July 1919 per 'City of Exeter' and was discharged 14 October 1919. His brother, William Arthur, enlisted in Adelaide on 16 July 1915, Service No. 2690, serving in 27th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement, which embarked from Adelaide, South Australia per HMAT A24 'Benalla' on 27 October 1915.
