Sarah Williams

Sarah was born to Maria (nee Lewis) and George Bolton at Mitchells Creek, New South Wales. At 21 Sarah was in the Territory where she married Frederick George Augustus(spelled Augustace on marriage certificate) Williams on 30 September 1890at the residence of Henry Emil Schunke in Plamerston. Frederick was a 23 year old blacksmith who had been in the Territory since July 1888. The couple had eight children: Frederick, Lewis, Charles, Harold, Walter, Norman, Ada and Lionel. In 1895, when Sarah was 26, she was one of the 82 women who enrolled to vote after the franchise was granted to South Australian and Territory women in 1894. Her occupation was listed as "married woman". Frederick was an innovative man involved with many businesses while he was in the Territory, including serving on the District Council and establishing a cordial factory. Sarah and Frederick had three children die prior to leaving the Territory in June 1916 for New South Wales. Frederick died at Orange in November 1937. Members of the family have confirmed that Sarah returned to the Territory after Frederick's death where she was working as a cook at the Vic Hotel in Darwin when she was evacuated back to New South Wales after the bombing. Sarah returned again to Northern Territory after the war - this time living in Katherine. Sarah died at Burwood in New South Wales on 17 January 1962 at the age of 93 and is buried in the Methodist section of the Woronora Cemetery
