CAMPONESES E FUNDOS DE PASTO NO NORDESTE DA BAHIA

International audienceThe text starts from the observation of the permanence of forms of peasant agriculture, precisely where peasant communities were maintained, in the sense of Mendras (1978), that is, of local societies, involved by a rural society increasingly integrated into the global capitalist market. To argue this thesis, we first examine the historical origin of this peasant agriculture, within the framework of the dismemberment of the great sesmarias of the Sertão do São Francisco, its diversified and laborious reproduction, in the hostile economic and political context of the 1960-1970s and its local strengthening through negotiation by the trade union movement, public intervention in areas known as the pasture fund and associated with these peasant communities. The example of pasture funds in the Massaroca region illustrate the characteristics of the constitution of a peasantry and the evolution of its forms of organization. It also allows analyzing the ongoing transformations and drawing more general lessons for the semi-arid Northeast region. The first part of the text tries to explain this specific situation, within the framework of land history and the emergence of peasant agriculture in the region. The second part presents the process of organization and local development that allowed the preservation of pasture funds in the hinterland of Bahia and, with them, a production system and a peasant way of life. The third part draws some lessons regarding resistance or the peasant agriculture project in a new context.O texto parte da constatação da permanência de formas de agricultura camponesa, precisamente onde se mantiveram comunidades camponesas, no sentido de Mendras (1978), quer dizer, de sociedades locais, envolvidas por uma sociedade rural cada vez mais integrada ao mercado capitalista global. Para argumentar essa tese, examinamos primeiro a origem histórica dessa agricultura camponesa, no marco do esmembramento das grandes sesmarias do Sertão do São Francisco, a sua reprodução diversifi cada e laboriosa, no contexto econômico e político hostil dos anos de 1960-1970 e o seu fortalecimento local por meio da negociação pelo movimento sindical, de uma intervenção pública em áreas conhecidas como fundo de pasto e associadas a essas comunidades camponesas. O exemplo do manejo dos fundos de pasto na região de Massaroca ilustra as características da constituição de um campesinato e da evolução das suas formas de organização. Permite também analisar as transformações em curso e tirar ensinamentos mais gerais para a região do Nordeste semi-árido. A primeira parte do texto tenta explicar essa situação específi ca, no marco da história fundiária e da emergência de uma agricultura camponesa na região. A segunda parte apresenta o processo de organização e de desenvolvimento local que permitiu preservar os fundos de pasto no sertão da Bahia e, com eles, um sistema de produção e um modo de vida camponês.
