Caption: "A freight train carrying an ammunition propellant exploded in this Oklahoma-border community Sunday, injured scores of residents and demolishing mush of the town. At least two persons were known dead and more than 100 were injured in two pre-dawn blasts heard up to 25 miles away. At least six of the injuried were in critical condition. One Oklahoman was injured in the blast. Mrs. Emma Wills of Hennessey was reported in serious condition at the Granette, Ark., Medical Center. Fires in nearby propane storage tanks and in railroad tank cars burned 18 hours after the explosion. Emergency aid poured in from four states as authorities evacuated 800 residents and several hundred vacationers because of additional explosions. The town was cleared for four hours while firefighters fought blazes and workmen tapped a burning tank of propane before it could explode. The last fire was extinguished at 10:30 p.m. Late Sunday night many residents began returning to their homes. The explosion devastated a 6-block section in the middle of Noel, a resort town less than 1,000 in the Ozark Mountains of extreme southwestern Missouri. All utilities and communications were knock out and dozens of businesses and homes were destroyed or heavily damaged.
