In the late nineteenth century, the field of studies focusing on the indigenous languages spoken in Argentina began to be more accurately defined. The collection of linguistic materials and the attempts to systematize them as grammatical or lexicographic resources were integrated in a programme that involved national scientific associations and the international academic world. This article focuses on the process of documentation of the indigenous languages that were spoken in Tierra del Fuego (Selknam, Haush, Yagan and Alakaluf), analysing the most common data collection strategy, i.e. using vocabularies or lexical lists.
