Albert Camus in Polish literary and theatrical culture in the years 1945-2000.

Praca opisuje wizerunek Alberta Camusa w Polsce w okresie od zakończenia drugiej wojny światowej do końca XX wieku; wyjaśnia przyczyny zmian, jakim ten wizerunek ulegał oraz funkcjonowanie twórczości pisarza wśród różnych grup odbiorców, szczególnie wśród przedstawicieli kultury literackiej i teatralnej. To pierwsza próba wykazania na jak szeroką skalę Camus pomógł zdefiniować polską kulturę – jak jego utwory przekraczały granice literatury, przenikając w społeczną świadomość, a związana z jego nazwiskiem moda kulturowa wydostawała się poza ramy systemu filozoficznego i ucieleśniała go. Premiery spektakli na podstawie dzieł Camusa i inspirowanych nimi, a także utwory literackie będące odpowiedzią na jego twórczość były zjawiskami tyleż artystycznymi, co socjologicznymi. Stawały się w takiej samej mierze przyczynkiem do dyskusji nad stanem teatru polskiego i polskiej literatury, jak nad potrzebą rozmawiania o człowieku w nowych kategoriach. Pisarz zachęcał do debaty o granicy pomiędzy uprawnieniami władzy a godnością jednostki, ale także do dyskusji o problemach indywidualnej egzystencji i samotności. Używany przez niego język literacki i interesująca go problematyka prowokowały polskich pisarzy do zderzania etyki z historią. Dostarczały także przykładu i uzasadnienia dla uprawiania moralistyki nieuwikłanej w doraźną publicystykę. Inspirowana dziełem Camusa literatura, obfitująca w problematykę odpowiedzialności i wolności woli była, paradoksalnie, świadectwem odczuwanej przez polskich pisarzy potrzeby niezależnego, nieskrępowanego prezentowania w literaturze istotnych zjawisk współczesności. Niepokój o duchowe losy świata, pytanie o źródła współczesnego tragizmu i o człowieka jako jednostki obdarzonej unikalną podmiotowością przenikały także spektakle oparte na tekstach Camusa, jakie wystawiano w Polsce. Z biegiem lat coraz wyraźniej podszywała je próba zaproponowania nowej etyki, która, charakteryzując się więziotwórczą mocą, pomogłaby człowiekowi zachować godność w świecie urzeczywistnionych totalitaryzmów.Ponieważ proza Camusa zadebiutowała w polskiej prasie w tym samym czasie co jego dramaturgia, pierwsze wydania książkowe jego utworów konkurowały z premierami spektakli na podstawie jego dramatów, a „francuski egzystencjalizm” zostawił swój ślad nie tylko na polskiej literaturze, ale także na poetyce realizacji teatralnych, praca nie została podporządkowana jednej, ściśle zdefiniowanej kategorii interpretacyjnej. Analizy i interpretacje – których źródłami są artykuły publicystyczne, powieści, opowiadania, dzienniki polskich autorów, ich korespondencja z Camusem i o Camusie, dokumentacja przedstawień, scenariusze teatralne, a także nagrania radiowe, telewizyjne i filmowe – zostały przeprowadzone z perspektywy literaturoznawczej, teatrologicznej i kulturoznawczej. Praca podzielona jest na pięć rozdziałów. "Twórczość Camusa a polityka kulturalna w pierwszym ćwierćwieczu PRL" prezentuje różne oceny dorobku literackiego i postaci pisarza oraz powody jego pełnej paradoksów recepcji wydawniczej. W drugim rozdziale, "Emigracja polska wobec Camusa", omówieniu poddano związki pomiędzy Camusem a pisarzami emigracyjnymi oraz stanowisko Camusa w sprawie wydarzeń politycznych w Polsce. Następnie, w "Recepcji literackiej dzieł Camusa" został nakreślony obraz polskich czytelników tego autora oraz omówione utwory, których autorzy czerpali z dzieła Camusa i podejmowali z nim polemikę. Rozdział "Camus w teatrze" opisuje przebieg i charakterystykę recepcji teatralnej utworów pisarza – wyjaśnia konfrontacyjną atmosferę, jaka towarzyszyła spotkaniom z Camusem na scenach teatrów repertuarowych i alternatywnych. Zarys tego w jaki sposób u schyłku minionego wieku postrzegano autora "Dżumy" znalazł się w "Wizerunku Camusa w ostatniej dekadzie XX wieku".The doctoral thesis depicts the image of Albert Camus in Poland from the end of the Second World War until the end of the 20th century; it explains the reasons behind the changes that this image underwent and the functioning of the writer's literary output among various groups of recipients, especially representatives of Polish literary and theater culture. This is the first attempt to show how broadly Camus helped to define the Polish artistic and intellectual landscape. His works crossed the boundaries of literature, penetrating into the social consciousness, and the cultural trend related to his name got beyond the framework of a philosophical system and embodied it.Theatrical performances based on the works of Camus and inspired by them, as well as literary works being the answer to his writing, were as much an artistic as a sociological phenomenon. They became a starting point for a discussion about the state of Polish culture and the need of talking about man in new categories. The writer encouraged a debate about the boundary between the privileges of power and the dignity of an individual, but also about the problems of individual existence and loneliness. The literary language he used and the issues that interested him provoked Polish writers to confront ethics with history. They also provided an example and justification for practicing moralism not entangled in journalism. The literature inspired by the work of Camus, frequently addressing issues of responsibility and freedom of will, was, paradoxically, an evidence of the need – so strongly felt by Polish writers – for independent, unhampered presentation of the important phenomena of modernity. Anxiety about the spiritual fate of the world, the question of the sources of contemporary tragedy, and of man as an entity endowed with a unique subjectivity permeated Polish performances based on Camus' texts. Over the years, they had become more and more saturated with an attempt to propose new ethics which, by creating bonds, would help man to maintain dignity in the world of realized totalitarian regimes.Camus' prose made its debut in the Polish press at the same time as his plays did, and the first book editions of his novels competed with the premieres of spectacles based on his dramas. Moreover, "French existentialism" left its mark not only on Polish literature but also on the poetics of theatrical performances. Thus, the dissertation is not subordinated to one strictly defined category of interpretation. Analyses and interpretations – based on sources such as journalistic articles, novels, short stories, Polish authors' diaries, their correspondence with Camus and about Camus, documentation of performances, theater scenarios, as well as radio, television and film recordings – are carried out from the perspectives of literary, theater, and cultural studies.The work is divided into five chapters. "The work of Camus and the cultural policy in the first quarter of the People's Republic of Poland" presents various assessments of the literary output and the figure of the writer, as well as the reasons of his publishing reception, full of paradoxes. In the second chapter, "Polish emigrants and Camus", the relationship between Camus and emigre writers, as well as Camus's standpoint on political events in Poland, are depicted. Then, in "The literary reception of Camus' works", a picture of Polish readers of the author is outlined, and the literary works by authors influenced by Camus and those who undertook polemic with him are discussed. The chapter "Camus w theater" portrays the course and characteristics of the theatrical reception of the writer's literary output – it explains the confrontational atmosphere that accompanied encounters with Camus on stages of repertory and alternative theaters. Ruminations on the way the author of "The Plague" was perceived at the end of the last century are included in "Camus' image in the last decade of the 20th century"
