Instrument as a Symbol of National Identity: Fujara among Slovaks in Serbia

In the focus of this research there is a wind instrument fujara. In 2005 it was entered as a Slovak national instrument into the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Thus, this traditional instrument became one of the symbols of Slovak national identity. This primarily solo shepherd’s instrument has specific musical acoustic characteristics. The normal playing technique is based on overblowing the instrument and the player can use overtones to play diatonic scale. Fujara was also used for communication between shepherds on remote pastures. Musicians who played fujara together in their spare time eventually associated with each other. Lately, this instrument has got its part in polyphonic music at concerts, in arrangements for various music genres. Besides traditional Slovak shepherd’s melodies adapted for two or more fujaras, this instrument can be heard in contemporary polyphonic music art compositions, combined with other instruments (string, wind instruments, etc.) This paper deals with the issues related to the fujara fostering by the members of Slovak national minority in Serbia: its presence or absence in folk performing, local instrument builders, ways of playing, etc.У фокусу интересовања овог истраживања налази се дувачки инструмент фујара. Он је као словачки народни инструмент 2005. године уписан на UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Тако је овај традиционални инструмент постао један од симбола националног идентитета Словака. Овај првенствено солистички пастирски инструмент има специфичне музичко акустичке особине, које при извођењу у појединим сегнемтима дају звучање налик двогласу. Фујара је коришћена и за комуникацију пастира на удаљеним пашњацима. У последње време у оквиру концертних активности појављују се дуети и вишечлане групе извођача на овом инструменту. У овом раду се разматрају питања у вези са неговањем фујаре код припадника словачке националне мањине у Србији: њено присуство или одсуство у народном извођаштву, локални градитељи инструмената и начини свирања, итд.Proceedings, 30 October - 3 November 2018 Tbilisi, Georgi
