A very wide basin full of fine gray sediments evidently slowly accumulated from the surrounding picturesque crumbling barren mtns. No trees in basin save those planted, scarce a sage or salt bush at long intervals. Glad to see trees on Tehachapi mtns. [Nov 29]. Vineyards seems low, rather sandy; vines low, squat, v little snow seen on Sierra, higher peaks cloud covered.
