time. Want of arrangements as to getting smaller steamer for shoals and rivers at head of bay, etc. Recalled Homer party at 7 P.M. Palachi killed Canada grouse with stone. It ranges north in Canada, etc. far as spruce grows. Found birch, brown or black, 30 [feet] [high] 1 [diameter], white campanula, many trees dead. On the stratified deposits (Tertiary) [West] side of Kichamak [Bay] and Cook Inlet considerable areas covered with dead forest, said to have been killed by showers of ashes and cinders p______ from Iliamna; some say by ordinary forest fires. The volcano, Mr. Woodbridge, who paid us a visit, told us flamed up lurid red last Wednesday night, 19th, flames or red glow 2 or or 300 [feet] [high]. He killed moose for us on our first visit on [East] side the [Bay] but we sailed just as he reached Homer. He is Superintendent of coal mines. [July 22] At 1 A.M. 22nd got the Saldovia party aboard, Mr. Harriman having to go ashore for them in launch. They did not expect us until morning of the 24th. Were asleep and did not hear steamer’s whistle, tho’ less than mile [distant]. Weather quite rough this A.M. early. Spray and rain driven in our window, wetting clothing. Sea now moderate, [barometer] rising, sun shining. Water lovely blue 10 A.M. steering south of Middleton Island. Passed it about 9 P.M. [July] 23rd. Foggy and cloudy until about 9 A.M. when clouds lifted, revealing the [West] side of the Malaspina [glacier] pouring from apparently 2 main [glaciers] the [fountains] of [which] could be traced 15 or 20 [miles] and up to height of 6 or 8000 [feet].
