41 [turning] the main portion of [thin] currents when they were easily caught as they floundered half dry in shallows among the gravel & boulders. They were placed in cans & carried upon mules over one of the [ ] highest passes in the range in striking contrast with these [premature] efforts are the scientific methods of propagation & distribution [practiced] by the US f [ ] at his [ ] headquarters on the McCloud. I was hastening on to Shasta anxious to reach its summit & explore its gls [glaciers] ere the setting in of the heaviest of its winter snows. From Redding to the [terminus] of the O branch of the C P RR is only about 20 miles. In walking wh I was greatly 42 interested in company the [farms] & [ ] & gen aspects of the foothills over wh [which] the road runs with [ ] of corresponding [position] & elevation in the southern half of the range. The discovery of a new [woodpecker] 3 new species of [ ] & a wild grape [vine] wh [which] festooned every ravine & hollow in the most lavish manner made me more than blest I was [glorious] & of course might carry on ere I was aware a [ ]-hauling freight to Yreka into whose good [graces] I committed myself by telling him about [ ] [ ] story directed me to Allens half a m [mile] above here where I was to spend the night & find food etc. just at dusk as hastened with [long] strideshttps://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmj-all/1781/thumbnail.jp
