In this paper, we analyse the concept of functional bidialectalism, pointed as a possible solution for problems related to Portuguese teaching as maternal language in brazilian schools. After that, based on elements from theoretical linguistics and on socio-historical data, we present the differentiation made between pattern norm and standard norm, emphasizing that this fact generates, as a consequence of its ascertainment, the necessity of modifying the concept of functional bidialectalism, for the fact it does not still include this differentiation.
