THIS SYMPOSIUM ON THE PRODUCTION OF alloy and special grades of steel seems to me to reflect the confidence with which your Government and fellow-countrymen consider India's future. It bespeaks a determination that a self-sustaining Indian economy shall be built to supply an ever-increasing portion of the material needs of the country. The steel production goals which have been set in the new Five Year Plan are a challenging objective which will engage most of the energies of India's steel prod-ucers and engineers.
