Though the art of making iron and steel was known and practised in India since ancient times, and India's pre-eminence in iron and steel continued right upto the 18th century, the foundation of the commercial iron and steel industry in India was laid only with the establishment of The Tata Iron and Steel Company Limited (Tisco) at Jam shedpur in 1907 followed by The Indian Iron and Steel Company (Iisco), Burnpur, in 1937.
