El estudio de Cerro Benitez en la Patagonia Chilena (Última Esperanza) permite documentar una génesis kárstica específica en los márgenes andinos, entre áreas hiper-húmedas al Oeste y regiones secas al Este de los Andes. Esta génesis kárstica se relaciona con la evolución de la cubierta de hielo Patagónico durante el Último Máximo Glacial (ca 40-17.5 ka cal BP) con avances glaciales y fluctuaciones del lóbulo de piedemonte de Última Esperanza. La evolución glacial impactó fuertemente Cerro Benitez, dando lugar al desarrollo de un lago proglacial indicado por hielo que acompañó la retirada de los hielos a fines del Pleistoceno.
