A tradução como quinta habilidade no ensino de LE

The objective of this paper is to present translation as another skill to be developed in the FL classroom, as well as, to demonstrate through translational activities that the use of translation helps to expand knowledge in the foreign language and to develop the autonomy of learners in the pursuit and choice of meaning, so that they also understand the cultural, in addition to the linguistic, aspects of each word and phrase for proper use in FL (BRANCO, 2010). To achieve these objectives, the research was organized into two distinct but complementary stages. First, teachers answered an investigative questionnaire, with the intention of evaluating preconceived notions regarding the use of translation in the FL classroom. Next, translational activities were conducted with the intention to confirm or refute the opinions expressed through the questionnaires. Observing the results of the implementation of the activities, we found, in the first instance, that the use of translational activities in FL classrooms promotes the development of the student’s language skills, bringing him to a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding the second language. These observations are contrary to the still present error held by teachers, as revealed through the analysis of the questionnaires, that translational activities in the FL classroom would not enhance a FL apprentice’s linguistic development.O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar a tradução como mais uma habilidade a ser desenvolvida em sala de aula de LE, como também demonstrar, através de atividades tradutórias, que o uso da tradução contribui para ampliar os conhecimentos na língua estrangeira e desenvolver a autonomia dos aprendizes na busca e melhor escolha de significados, de modo que compreendam também os aspectos culturais, além dos linguísticos de cada palavra e frase para o uso correto na LE (BRANCO, 2010). Para atingir esses objetivos, a pesquisa foi organizada em duas etapas distintas, mas complementares. Em um primeiro momento, foram aplicados questionários investigativos com a intenção de avaliar as opiniões prévias dos professores com relação ao uso da tradução em sala de aula de LE. Na sequência, foram aplicadas atividades tradutórias com a intenção de confirmar ou não as opiniões expressas nos questionários. A observação dos resultados da aplicação das atividades revela, em primeira instância, que o uso de atividades tradutórias em salas de aula de LE promove o desenvolvimento das habilidades linguísticas do aluno, levando-o a um conhecimento mais aprofundado sobre as questões que envolvem a segunda língua. Essas observações se contrapõem à noção errônea e ainda presente, revelada pela análise dos questionários aplicados aos professores, que consideram que as atividades tradutórias em sala de aula de LE não contribuiriam para o desenvolvimento linguístico do aprendiz de LE
