One is led to assume that the orbital magnetic moment of the rare earth ions in ferrimagnetic garnets is quenched at low temperature. By comparing our experimental results on gallates and ferrites with the behaviour of the Gd3+ ion, we show the importance of this effect for Dy3+ , Er3+ and Yb3+, and its dependence on the temperature and the magnetic field.
