The dispersion of the refractive index of nitric oxide has been measured in the fundamental vibration-rotation band at 5.3 μ and which provided the square value of the pure vibrational transition moment R 10; a measure of the integrated intensity of the band (132 cm-2 atm-1 at 273 °K) and the absolute value of the derivative M1 of the dipole moment in regard to the internuclear distance (|M1| = 2.30 debye/angström) has been deduced from this ; M1 is believed to be positive.
