Studies on the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on plant root systems are frequently limited by the availability of techniques. The complex organisation of root systems and their inaccessibility below ground render it technically difficult to make accurate measurements of either root morphology or root dynamics. The 2 systems described both utilise image analysis. One makes possible detailed measurements of root morphology on harvestec root samples, permitting quantitative relationships between different hierarchical orders to be determined.
