Maleic anhydride is made by an oxidation of benzene in gas phase with Vanadium Pentaoxide (V2O5) catalyst inside fixed bed multitube reactor. The reaction occurs at 3500C-4000C and 20 atm condition. Reaction is highly exotermic, so it is important to keep the temperature value using dowtherm A as a cooler. Product is separated using absorber tower with dibutyl phthalate as a solvent. After that maleic anhydride as a product is purified in distillation column until the purity reaches 99.5%. This plant is designed at 28,000 ton per year capacity.
