Spain Fumigated. Consensus and Silence on the Topic of Fumigation of Mineral Acids in Spain, 1770-1804

Les travaux que Guyton de Morveau consacra à soutenir ses idées sur le pouvoir purificateur des acides minéraux furent systématiquement traduits en Espagne à partir des années 1790 et contribuèrent de manière décisive à la construction d’un consensus imparfait dans la société espagnole de la fin du XVIIIe siècle autour de l’usage des fumigations d’acides minéraux dans le traitement et la prévention des maladies épidémiques. Dans cette étude sont analysés les acteurs, les intérêts et les stratégies qui contribuèrent à la construction de ce consensus imparfait et à son maintien pendant la première décennie du XIXe siècle, alors que la fièvre jaune se répandait dans les villes et les villages du sud et de l’est de la Péninsule ibérique.The work of Guyton de Morveau, devoted to the notion of the purifying power of mineral acids, was systematically translated in Spain, beginning in the 1790s. His work decisively contributed to the construction of an imperfect consensus in Spanish society at the end of the eighteenth century over the use of the fumigation of mineral acids in the treatment and prevention of epidemics. Our article examines the persons, the interests, and the strategies that helped to construct this imperfect consensus, as well as how it was maintained during the first ten years of the nineteenth century, at a time when yellow fever spread in the towns and villages in the south and the east of the Iberian Peninsula
