Burnout is a growing phenomenon and is causing large problems and costs to individuals, organisations and society alike. This study examines the relationships between performance based self-esteem (PBSE), work related stress factors and burnout. Through a web survey (N=184) the participants PBSE, work related stress factors and degree of burnout was measured through the Pbse scale, Areas of Work Scale (AWS) and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Work related stress factors (in the form of Workload, Control, Reward and Values) were found to have a larger statistical relationship with burnout than PBSE.
