Knapping and polishing stone by Neolithic agricultural populations in a Saharan refuge area : (Dhar Nema, south-eastern Mauritania)

Falaise échancrée, de grès et de pélites ordoviciennes, ponctuée de passées de dolérite, le Dhar Nema est la terminaison sud-est de l'arc des Dhar de Mauritanie sud-orientale. Dans un contexte général d'aridification du Sahara, son réseau hydrographique connecté à de puissantes nappes phréatiques fossiles a permis à des populations rassemblées par la péjoration climatique d'y trouver refuge, du 3ème au 1er millénaire avant notre ère. Ce nouvel environnement s’est révélé favorable à l'apparition d'innovations sociales et techniques conduisant à un développement local de l'agriculture. L'étude typo-technologique du matériel lithique a montré des distinctions dans les chaînes opératoires selon la nature des supports. Au côté d'un important mobilier de broyage, deux types d'outils originaux ressortent plus précisément de la panoplie d'outils : les grandes haches taillées et les disques. Ce grand outillage, dont quelques pièces ont également été trouvées sur le Dhar Oualata, trouve des résonances avec celui de la région malienne située entre Nioro du Sahel et les plaines sud de l’Assaba en Mauritanie.Ordovician sandstone and schist indented cliff, punctuated with doleritic intercalations, Dhar, Nema is the southeast ending of Dhar's bow in South-Eastern Mauritania. ln a general context of Sahara' s aridification, its water system connected to powerful fossil groundwaters allowed human groups gathered by the climatic pejoration to find refuge there, from the 3rd to 1st millennium BC. This new environment showed itself favorable to the appearance of social and technical innovations leading to a local agricultural development. Typotechnological study of the lithic material showed distinctions in the operational sequence according to blank's type. Besides an abundant grinding material, two original tool types are emphasized from the toolkit : the big knapped axes and the disks. This big set of tools, including some artifacts were also found on Dhar Oualata, finds some resonance with that of the Malian region located between Nioro du Sahel and Southern plains Assaba in Mauritania
