[4]I saw Henry Reid in Madison. He did not know that you were home he is attending the univers- ity We had a fine time at Mad\u27 JM[1] Ind\u27 Sunday Sep\u27 1st 67Dear brother DanWe hope your health improves We arrived here last Thursday I mean to start for the south tomorrow. I feel touches of the old depressing melancholy which always comes when I leave friends for strangers. I do not know a [illegible] I shall go, nor when I shall return, but I will take good care of myself, & I hope that none of my friends will have anxiety about me. You must not expect to hear from me very often, for my facilities for writing will not likely be good. I anticipate a great deal of pleasure from this walk and also a good deal of fatigue [2]I forgot to say to you before I left, that you are very welcome to any money your may need, which is in Jno [John] Reids or Davids hands In case anything should be- fall me I wish you would take care of the few effects I have here, in care of Mr Sutherland, & also of the money owed me by Trout & Jay, Canada & by Jno\u27 [John] Reid & David Muir, - Trout & Jay gives me $180.00 Can\u27 currency David M\u27; Jno [John] Reid about $[700] between them I would like the money equally divided between Mary, Anna, Joanne, Let Sarah have one of the clocks if she wishes it & keep the rest of the machinery & my tools [to] yourself, Divide my[3]books, pictures & plants etc among [D] Galloway, [Jno]\u27 Reid, David Muir, & their little ones, & our own family generally as you wish, [only] let mother have choice of everything Leave some momento with my friend here viz the Sutherlands & Merrills - Kern\u27 Henry Butler MadisonI do not expect this letter to be of any use but it is well enough to have it in existence I hope you will not infer from all this that I am going into great danger.
