The Fall of the Roman Empire. Historiographical Reflection from Francis Bacon to Edward Gibbon

The study reveals the evolution of the views of the Enlightenment era English intellectuals on the causes and nature of the fall of the Roman Empire. It is shown that the educators were not interested in the original history of the collapse of the antiquity. Their attention was focused on the factors of the collapse of the Roman state. Purely historical works on this topic appear only from the 1730s on before the publication of the epochal work of E. Gibbon such works were very superficial. During the 17th century and even in the first half of the 18th century works on similar topics were strongly influenced by the tradition of humanists, and sometimes hindered the development of rationalism in the analysis of the decline of Rome. There was likely an inertial influence of medieval views on the assessment of the antiquity’s decay (for example – the views of Newton). Almost all intellectuals and educators aspired to correlate this topic with their respective contemporary social and political situation.Исследование раскрывает эволюцию взглядов английских интеллектуалов эпохи Просвещения на причины и характер падения Римской империи. Показано, что первоначально собственно история распада античности просветителей не интересовала. Их внимание было сосредоточено на факторах распада римской государственности. Сугубо исторические труды, затрагивавшие эту тему, появляются лишь с 30-х гг. XVIII в. До начала публикации эпохального труда Э. Гиббона такие труды были весьма поверхностными. В течение XVII в. и в первой половине XVIII в. на подобную тематику сильно влияла традиция гуманистов, иногда даже мешавшая развитию рационализма в анализе упадка Рима. Имело место даже инерционное влияние средневековых взглядов на оценку процессов распада античности (пример – взгляды И. Ньютона). Практически у всех интеллектуалов – просветителей эта тема была актуализирована соотнесением ее с современной этим авторам социальной и политической обстановкой
