Richard M. Leavell

Richard Marion Leavell, B.A., M.A., LL.D. Delta Psi. Phi Sigma Literary Society. Graduated with honors. He was born at Cherry Creek, Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Captain in 2nd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. Captured at Gettysburg. Prisoner on Johnson\u27s Island; released through the help of Dr. F.A.P. Barnard. Principal of Verona Male Academy, 1865-1870, Mercantile business, 1870-74. Member of the Mississippi Legislature, 1872-73. Married Miss Mattie L. Berry of Tippah County, Mississippi, on March 4, 1863. Professor of English at Mississippi College, 1882-89, following which he was appointed to the chair of English and Belles-Lettres, Philosophy, Logic and Political Economy at the University of Mississippi. He served in the letter capacity until 1897 at which time he was designated Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy, Logic and Political Economy, retiring in 1909 to emeritus position. He was a Baptist and also served as president of the Alumni Association of the University in 1914-15. He died August 17, 1918, at Oxford. Pictured in the 1920 Ole Miss, he was among the illustrious alumni to whom the annual was dedicated that year. Leavell Dormitory was named in his honor.
