Un fluide non-newtonien est un fluide dont la relation entre son taux de déformation et la contrainte qui lui est imposé n'est pas linéaire. Dans un milieu poreux, la contrainte imposée au fluide dépend de la pression imposée mais aussi de la taille des pores, et donc de la perméabilité à l'échelle macroscopique. Certains fluides peuvent avoir une rhéologie qui présente un changement à partir d'un seuil en contrainte. Si la taille des pores est aléatoire, le fluide va alors changer de régime de façon hétérogène dans le milieu.
