Nowadays, the conversion of renewable resources to valuable chemicals and bio-fuels represents a key process in order to make the world less dependent on fossil resources. Under this perspective, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is one of the most important bio-based compounds that can be employed as platform-chemical for the synthesis of a wide range of fuels, monomers and other valuable products. In fact, HMF can be obtained from the dehydration of biomassderived sugars and its reactive structure makes it prone to several reactions.
