A Group of Wasatch Academy Students

A group photo of seven girls from Wasatch Academy. The girls pose in a two row formation. The front row, consisting of three girls, sits on what appears to be grass; and the back row, consisting of four girls, stands holding an "Honor Class" pennant. The girls are dressed in a variety of light and dark colored dresses. They also wear various hairstyles and the girl in the back row on the far left wears a cap. The grass field where the girls pose is a wide open area with a wooden fence enclosing the field, tall trees that stand in a uniform row, and two houses. A telephone pole can also been seen in the skyline near the center. The foreground is the grass field. There are two white objects at far left that lay flat on the ground.The photograph is in good condition. The corners have slight creases in them and the photograph does show signs of discoloration due to age. Written on the back is the following: "A group of Wasatch Academy girls." There is no other information of who the girls are or when and where the photograph was taken. Wasatch Academy was founded on April 19, 1875 by the Reverend Duncan James McMillan whom also had a major influence in founding Westminster College. A protégé of Sheldon Jackson, he came to the Salt Lake Valley in March of 1875 to find refuge from his bronchial condition and to establish a proselytizing mission to convert Mormons. However, McMillan soon turned his efforts to education when his proselytizing efforts towards the Mormons proved futile. He then founded Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah and opened a number of subsequent schools of the same nature in northern and southern Utah
