Ashley Cooperative Mecantile was the foremost store in the area. It was opened in February 1887 on the corner of Main and Vernal Avenue in the heart of Ashley Center. The building became an important part of town and was soon known as the Co-op Block. The Ashly Co-op rented retail space to various businesses such as Vernal Drug, Vernal Express and Telephone Exchange
