Ignatio, Utah was so-named for one of the Ute Indian chiefs in the tribe. He was related to Chief Ouray. Ignatio was not always its name and never had a township or a U.S. Post Office. A lot of the time it was referred to as "White River Station" especially during the years that freight teams and passengers came to the Uinta Basin from Dragon and Watson and horses needed a rest stop. Before the Uintah Railway entered this arear in 1904, this was alread the natural crossing point of the White River, and it was called "Wagon Axle." Looking south, in the direction of Ignatio from the north side of the Whire River, you can see the road as it made its way downhill and onto the iron bridge across the river
