April 18-24 is National Volunteer Week. Members of University Hospital's Volunteer Auxiliary and other volunteers donated approximately 25,000 hours in 1981. "They take time to care!" says Mavis Pana, assistant director, Volunteer Services. " Volunteers keep relatives and friends of surgery patients informed and reassured. They work in other waiting areas, the recovery room, emergency room, clinics, The Gift Shoppe, The Sandwich Rx and at the information desk. Through the patient representative program, specially trained volunteers visit patients and help ease any emotional trauma connected with hospitalization. One of the objectives of University Hospital's Volunteer Auxiliary is fund- raising. The expanded gift shop, the sandwich shop and chapel were all paid for in part by funds from the auxiliary's $117,176 building pledge contribution. The 1981 Utah Open Golf Tournament, sponsored by the auxiliary, raised more than $40,000. And this month, a special The University Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary Endowment is a first for the volunteers. Auxiliary President Pat Christensen presented a $50,000 check to Associate Hospital Administrator Dale Gunnell at the auxiliary's April 5 board meeting. auxiliary endowment of $50,000 was presented to the hospital from funds raised through auxiliary projects and the Utah Open. "The successes we've experienced this year are a tribute to the volunteers," says outgoing Volunteer Auxiliary President Pat Christensen. "They have responded superbly to unusual and sometimes difficult assignments. I appreciate their help and cooperation." Hospital Administrator Jerry Smith says the volunteers make vital contributions to University Hospital. " They support the administration in special needs, they enhance the image of the hospital in the community and they create a very personal, accommodating atmosphere. Without them, our patients would miss out on programs and services we otherwise could not provide." Hospital Administration invites all volunteers to a special reception Friday, April 23, from 9-10 a.m. and 3-4 p.m. in the Administration office reception area. Volunteer auxiliary names new president Lillian Donaldson will be installed as president of University Hospital's Volunteer Auxiliary at the annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon June 3. She replaces Pat Christensen whose term expires July 1. As auxiliary president, Lillian will coordinate all auxiliary projects and serve as an "ex officio" member of the University Hospital Board, which approves plans for fund-raising programs and changes in the auxiliary's structure. Lillian is a volunteer in the surgery waiting area and The Sandwich Rx. She began volunteering at University Medical Center in 1976. State auxiliary elects Rea Barrus Volunteer Rea Barrus recently was elected vice president of the Utah State Auxiliary at the Utah Hospital Association's annual meeting. She will work with other State Auxiliary board members in overseeing hospital volunteer auxiliaries throughout Utah. Rea is former president of University Hospital's Volunteer Auxiliary and currently serves in The Sandwich Rx. Volunteer Hattie Jones manages the auxiliary Gift Shoppe- a colorful showroom filled with gifts to suit every taste and pocketbook. "I love working here," says Hattie, "mostly because I'm around a lot of caring people." Hattie came to the Medical Center in 1980 as an information desk volunteer. Former owner of a gift shop in Riverton, Hattie also has chaired committees and coordinated golf tournaments at Willow Creek Country Club. She also has worked at the Women's Resource Center. Other Gift Shoppe volunteers include Mary Fern, Phyllis Marks, Midge Lennberg, Priscilla Rublacava, Virginia Nelson, LaMar Cramer, Wilma Webster, Helen Brown and Pat Christensen. The Grand Prize winner of The Gift Shoppe's " Tax Grief Relief" drawing is Teresa Thomsen, burn technician. She won a lead crystal vase valued at $340. Congratulations! " I'll do anything to get the word out that The Sandwich Rx specializes in quality AND quantity!" says sandwich shop chairman and manager Jane Brown. The Sandwich Rx, now open Sundays, offers a unique selection of deli sandwiches, pastries and salads. It also does a thriving "to go" and phone order business. Jane is a former volunteer auxiliary president who began volunteering in 1974 at the information desk. She also served on the Utah State Auxiliary Council. A former school teacher and an accomplished organist and pianist, this seven- day-a-week volunteer enjoys reading and being a Cub Scout Den Leader. Other volunteers who help in The Sandwich Rx are Virginia Nelson, Lillian Donaldson, Paul DeWitt, Bill Cockayne, Rea Barrus, Richard Berghout, Sharon Fullmer, Peggy Scott, Brenda Ross, Sue Anne Simmons and Skip Brown. National Nurse-Midwife Week is April 19-26. University Hospital recognizes its four certified nurse-midwives: Deanne Roberts, Nancy Rehm, Ann Deneris and Cynthia Dalsing. Wednesday, April 21 is the " No Occasion" Med Center Mixer (think up your own theme). All Medical Center employees, housestaff, faculty and students are invited to the Ft. Douglas Officers' Club from 4:30-8:30 p.m. for free music and munchies, a drawing for Med Center T-shirts and an aerobics dance demonstration by a Spa Vita Nova instructor (prizes for audience participation and the best "anaerobic" exhibition). There is no cover charge. The Physicians Billing Office and University Radiology Associates have moved. Both offices now are located on 3W, Bldg. 521. Phone numbers for both offices remain the same. A Medical Center relay team consisting of medical student Ron Day, nursing students Marilyn French and Jill Molen and physical therapy student Brent Hamblin took first place at the recent kickoff for the Heart Association's "Run for Life" activities.
