Volume2/1985_April19INTERCOM UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER April 19, 1985 Volunteers Honored This Week Take a minute and say thank you to as many of University Hospital's 150 volunteers as you see this week. During National Volunteer Week, April 22-28, the hospital is officially honoring the many area residents who collectively spend over 20,000 hours yearly helping patients, visitors and staff. Joyce Mihas, assistant director of volunteer services, says, "Our volunteers are a group whose loyal support, year after year, is indispensable to the quality care given University Hospital patients. They bring a wealth of experience in living and a diversity of background to our hospital community." According to Ms. Mihas, volunteers have professional and non-professional backgrounds. Some are recently retired and some are still employed. "By freeing staff for more technical work, and by bringing extra comfort, warmth and security to our patients, University Hospital volunteers play a role that is invaluable," she said. "The volunteers also are some of our best public relations people." University and high school students are regular hospital volunteers. Each summer teenage "Junior Volunteers" also give their time and enthusiasm to University Hospital. Most of the volunteers at the hospital are members of the Volunteer Auxiliary. According to their president, Barbara Chapman, the Volunteer Auxiliary is a group which supports in-service programs, helps the community become aware of University Hospital and raises funds for the hospital. The Auxiliary sponsors the Utah Open Golf Tournament, Carols by Candlelight at the Dickens Festival, the Christmas bazaar, a Valentine bake sale and an Easter egg sale. It also runs the Gift Shop. It has provided funding for the Health Careers Pro- Herb Russell recently was honored by Volunteer Director Suzanne Nelson and Hospital Administrator George Belsey for his 29 years of continuous volunteer service in the Department of Psychiatry. Ms. Nelson presents him with the "exceptional volunteer" pin. gram, clothes closet, Hope Chapel, volunteer orientation meetings, pediatric programs, rehabilitation department and arts and crafts materials for long-term patients. During the current year, the Auxiliary has donated approximately $38,000 to University Hospital. University Hospital Classic Runners, wheelchair riders and walkers, be sure to sign up for the first annual University Hospital Classic 5 K and 10 K race, set for Saturday, April 27, at 10 a.m. Registration materials and T-shirts are available in Medical Illustrations, room AC 113 and Community Relations, room 2753. Last- minute registration will begin at 9 a.m. on race day. The $7 entry fee includes a T-shirt and number. All proceeds from the annual race will aid patient services at University Hospital; this year's funds go to the Intermountain Transplant Center. This is in conjunction with National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, April 21-27. The race begins and ends at University Hospital, with different turn-around points for the 5K and 10 K distances. Scuba Reminder If you are interested in learning how to SCUBA dive, don't forget to attend the short meeting at noon on Friday, April 26 in Classroom A of the School of Medicine (just across from the cafeteria). All University Health Sciences Center personnel, their family members and friends are invited to attend the meeting and sign up for lessons at a reduced rate. Anyone who cannot attend the meeting and who wants more information should call Ken Johnson, ext. 7387. Thanks From Alene Editor's note: Alene Russon, acting associate administrator for Nursing, retired after 24 years to accept a new position at Holy Cross Hospital. She recently was honored by Hospital Administration and her many friends at University Hospital. This is her response. When I think of the University of Utah Hospital, I will not be thinking of artificial hearts, heart transplants, separation of Siamese twins or any other modern medical miracles, but of the many wonderful friends I've known through the years that I have worked at the U. I hesitate to say 'worked' because the years have been pleasurable and in many ways 'my mental therapy.' I appreciate all of you who took time to stop by the Board Room to say goodbye on April 9. To those whom I was unable to see on that day or over the last two weeks, ' goodbye and best wishes'. Anytime anyone is at Holy Cross Hosptial for any reason, please find me and say 'hello.' The plaque I received will be a constant reminder of my good years of experiences and many friends. The silver casserole dish is wonderful. I guess I'll have to cook and put it to use. Thanks to all and best wishes! Alene Russon Junior Volunteers Sought University Hospital Volunteer Services is interviewing candidates for the junior volunteer summer pro-gram. Teenagers ages 15-18 who would like to participate should call Dot Maxfield at Volunteer Services, ext. 2278. Junior volunteers will work Monday, June 10 through Friday, August 30. Orientation is May 18. Congratulations to the University Hospital Ski Team, which was the silver cup winner at the recent Welders Cup III competition at Park West. Team members Dr. Kevin Flaherty, Timothy Branigan, Karen Hillier, Rose Ann Milano and Scott Mcjames competed against representatives from all Utah hospitals. Branigan placed first in the men's overall category. Newborn ICU To Sponsor Raffle The Newborn ICU and Parent-to-Parent are sponsoring a fund-raising raffle. The prize drawing will take place on Tuesday, April 30. The $1 raffle tickets are available from NBICU nurses or by calling extension 7052. Prizes include a cordless phone, jewelry, play tickets, an ice chest, a silk woven tapestry, a cutlery set, dinners, gift certificates, tickets to the 49th Street Galleria and more. Proceeds from the raffle will be used to support the Parent-to-Parent program - a support group for parents of infants in the NBICU. Gallery Features Hunter Jackson Hunter Jackson Hunter Jackson, Ph.D., a research assistant professor in the Department of Anatomy, is displaying his black-and- white photos this month in Medical Illustration's Hallside Gallery. Dr. Jackson said he began his training in photography while working on a graduate degree in English and Literature at the University of Illinois. He earned a doctorate at Yale University and then moved to Salt Lake City where he continued his photography training with Bill Salmon. Dr. Jackson said he now is doing mostly portrait work with Lynn Yoshikami, a local professional photographer. They will exhibit their work in the Hallside Gallery in September. Dr. Jackson is married to Lynn Kerr, a sophomore medical student at the University. They have a son, Zeke, who is the subject of one of Dr. Jackson's photos
