Volume2/1977_September27Acting administrator appointed for College of Medicine Dr. Cecil Samuelson, assistant professor of medicine in the division of arthritis, has been appointed chief administrative officer (acting dean) of the College of Medicine. He will serve in that capacity until a new dean is selected. Dr. Samuelson replaces Dr. Cedric Davern, who left the deanship Sept. 15 to become University vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Samuelson's appointment was confirmed by the and he is now occupying the dean's U office on a half- I H H ^ B time basis. DR. SAMUELSON The tide of chief administrative officer was suggested by Dr. John Dixon, vice president for health sciences, who named Dr. Samuelson to the position. "Although the University generally uses the designation 'acting dean,' " Dr. Dixon said, " I wanted to indicate that Dr. Samuelson's role is not an interim or acting one in regard to decision making." Dr. Samuelson previously served on the dean's office staff from 1973 to 1976, first as assistant dean for ad-missions and then as assistant dean for medical education. He sees maintaining continuity as his primary goal in his new role. "As far as the ongoing programs of the College of Medicine are concerned, I'll be doing essentially what the dean does," he said. " But I'll try to minimize making decisions Artificial organs outdoor enthusiasts attack 25 miles of Grand Canyon trails You've heard the adage about playing together and staying together. Well, the division of artificial organs seems to take it seriously. A group of twelve, consisting of division staff members and guests, recently shared five days of togetherness and 25 miles of footwork as they hiked across the Grand Canyon from the north to the south rim. And this type of staff event is not an unusual occurrence, according to John Warner, division administrator. The division sponsors four major outdoor excursions yearly, often with 30 to 40 people participating; and division staff members also take one-day excursions in between. "Our winter trip is usually on snowshoes or of a long- term nature that might limit the options of the next dean." It is expected that a new dean will relieve Dr. Samuelson of his temporary duties early in 1978. "The search committee is moving rapidly and is now reviewing an excellent list of internal and external candidates for the position," Dr. Dixon said. At Dr. Samuelson's request, according to Dr. Dixon, he is not among the candidates being considered. cross- country skis, then in the spring we take a jeep safari to Canyonlands," Mr. Warner said. The division's fall trips, like the Grand Canyon hike, are the ones that provide extra variety and a special challenge. Past excursions have included houseboat trips and hikes through Escalante Canyon and the Zion Narrows. "One year we took a river trip no one else has ever done," Mr. Warner said, "by backpacking the rubber rafts to an out-of-the-way point on the Green River." This outdoor activity tradition started a number of years ago when Mr. Warner gave a slide presentation on Canyonlands to a division staff meeting and found that " everybody wanted to go." "So it started with me as the organizer, and it's just continued that way until now they all call me the wagon master," he said. The outdoor excursions have had definite beneficial effects for the division, according to Mr. Warner. "They're a good way of building a closeness and feeling of unity and cooperation among the staff," he said. "And they also help keep us in shape." New staff Dr. James Scott, who was appointed to the Medical Center staff as chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology on July 1, arrived here on a full- time basis during August. Dr. Scott was previously an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City. Prior to that, he served on the staff of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. Dr. Scott's special research interest is reproductive immunology. Dr. James Bryner also recently joined the staff of the department of obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Bryner received his M. D. degree from the University of Utah College of Medicine and completed an internship and residency at LDS Hospital. He recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship in endocrinology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Dr. Eldon Gardner has been appointed a research professor in the Department of Medical Biophysics and Computing. A distinguished teacher and scientist, Dr. Gardner has served Utah State University as a professor of zoology, as dean of the college of science and as dean of the graduate school. He has made extensive contributions in the field of genetics, particularly in the area of the heritabilitv of certain types of cancer. Promotions and new assignments Darlene Craig has been appointed head nurse for the surgical intensive care unit. Ms. Craig was previously head nurse for the 3 West unit. Now serving 3 West as acting head nurse is Susan Brodine. Al Losee has been named director of general and plant accounting for University Hospital. In that role he will be responsible for hospital accounting, accounts payable, cashiering and computer input control functions. Mr. Losee has held this position on an acting basis since March 1977. Prior to that, he served the hospital as manager of accounting. Sharon Morse assumed the position of head nurse for the 5 East nursery on Sept. 26. She has been a staff nurse in the Intermountain Newborn Intensive Care Center. Juanita Takeno has been selected to serve as an assistant director of nursing/ in- house acting administrator ( a role formerly known as nursing supervisor). Ms. Takeno was previously a staff nurse in the cerebrovascular intensive care unit. In her new role, she will have hospital-wide supervisory responsibility for evening-shift nursing care activities. Departures Dr. Robert Kane, chief of the division of community medicine of the department of family and community medicine since 1970, resigned from the Medical Center Aug. 31. He is now filling a research position on the staff of the Rand Corporation in Los Angeles. Until a permanent replacement for Dr. Kane is recruited, Dr. Diana Wright will serve as acting chief of the division of community medicine. New policies Outpatient department and emergency room patients can now receive a discount on their hospital registration fee by paying the fee in cash or by check at the time of their visit. The discount will be slightly over 4 percent. It amounts to $ 1 on the $ 22.50 emergency room registration fee and 25 cents on the $6 outpatient registration fee. This policy went into effect Sept. 19 for a 90-day trial period. Its purpose is to reduce the expense of follow-up billings and to accelerate the hospital's cash flow. In compliance with recent Federal regulations that have grown out of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, University Hospital has adopted a policy of non- discrimination in regard to the handicapped. This policy, which became effective in early September, will affect patient services, employment practices and employee training programs. Insuring physical accessibility for the handicapped to all hospital facilities will be a major priority as the policy is implemented. Hospital training director Juan Benavidez will coordinate the program in cooperation with the campus- wide efforts of the University's office of equal opportunity. Goings on Winners of the UUMC Golf Classic held Sept. 16 at the University Golf Course took home both trophies and prizes. Placing first for a second in the scotch foursome tournament's seven- year history were Rosemary Tepper and Larry Smith, both of the social work department. Second-place honors went to Terry Turner and Kathy Ranstrom, purchasing. Dennis Van Roosendahl and Barbara Keane, nursing administration, tied for third place with Linda Book, pediatrics, and Malcolm Berenson, gastroenterology. The annual tournament provides a variation of golf for two- member teams. Partners play one ball, taking alternate shots for a combined score.
